Michelle Liu on qualities and the Galilean intuition
Time & Location
About the Event
At the next session of Mind Readings, we will discuss Michelle Liu's upcoming paper "Qualities and the Galilean Intuition". Dr. Liu will be present at the read-ahead seminar and will reply to questions and comments.
It is often thought that sensible qualities such as colours do not exist as properties of physical objects, an idea known as the ‘Galilean intuition’ (Boghossian and Velleman 1989). This paper focuses on the case of colour. Against supporters of the Galilean intuition, it argues that we should not eliminate colours from the world, and appeals especially to theorists who, like Philip Goff, are already convinced that the quantitative language of physical science fails to capture all qualities.
